On 20 October 2019, the Litoro team and its supporters ran in the Gun Run to raise funds for the 2020 LitoroConnect Scholarship Programme as well as Fight Back SA, a NPO that provides self-defence classes for girls in rural areas. Together we ran 1,259 kilometers and raised over R80,000.
Runners collected donations and thanks to the contributions of our incredibly generous sponsors we were able to raffle prizes to those who supported the cause. Our top fundraiser was Carla Shulze Doerr who raised an invaluable R13,430 and our fastest runners were Nicola Wills and Kelton Miller, who will be joining in on an activity with our LitoroConnect Scholars later this year.
Thank you to everyone who helped us surpass our original goal of R60,000 and made this event a great success. A special thank you goes to the 12 Apostles Hotel & Spa, AA Badenhorst, Café Caprice, Constantia Glen, Lomond Wine Estate, Romansbaai Beach & Fynbos Estate, YogaSpirit, Superior Packaging, The Athletic Club & Social, The Galileo Open Air Cinema, The Movement Lab, Wedgewood Golf and Country Estate, We Love Summer and Zimos Technologies for your generous contributions and continued support.
The Fight Back SA Non-Profit Programme focuses on the empowerment of young women through self-defence classes and mentorship. They believe that by empowering women through self-defence skills and coaching, they can lower the statistics of rape and assault against women in South Africa. Accordingly, their team works tirelessly each day to ensure young women are able to take their safety into their own hands. Due to Litoro’s financial contribution, on the 4th of December 2019 Fight Back SA were able to host a self-defence (Krav Maga) workshop with over 80 women and children of all ages from Westridge in Mitchells Plain. Every participant also received a pepper spray and was taught how to use it effectively as a deterrent mechanism. We are also working on arranging workshops in 2020 for girls at all three of our partner schools as well as our dedicated volunteers.
